When a VPS infrastructure needs capacity planning, not just more resources

Adding more CPU, RAM or storage is an easy decision. The hard part is understanding whether it really solves the problem or just postpones the next one.

This is exactly where capacity planning comes in. Not as an enterprise buzzword, but as the habit of looking at the load ahead rather than only reactively.

What tells you that you already need this approach

  • resource pressure starts to repeat rather than being a one-off
  • new services arrive faster than a clear assessment of capacity
  • every decision is "give it a bit more resources" without it being clear why
  • there is no good answer to the question of where the next bottleneck is
Capacity planning is not just a graph. It is the discipline of seeing where the infrastructure will start to behave badly before it comes to an incident.
