How we use Proxmox 9 and KVM for the VPS workload

In a small or medium VPS infrastructure the virtualisation layer is not just a checkbox. It decides how you think about CPU pinning, storage access, maintenance windows and recoverability.

Our publicly shown compute layer runs on Proxmox 9.1 / KVM. We like this combination because it is predictable enough for a production workload and at the same time gives normal control over the virtual machines, the storage links and the operational workflow.

What matters in such an environment

  • a clear separation between the compute and storage roles
  • no chaotic mixing of experimental changes with the production workload
  • thinking in advance about how maintenance is done without unnecessary risk
  • knowing which VMs are latency-sensitive and which are not
Many people only look at how many cores and how much RAM the host has. In practice it matters more how predictably the whole environment behaves during storage operations, backup jobs and simultaneous customer workloads.

In the next topics we will go deeper into how we look at storage dependencies, the internal network and the operational risk around the Proxmox hosts.
