Incremental versus full backup: when the compromise is reasonable

The backup discussion often comes down to "full" versus "incremental", as if there were a universally right answer. In reality the choice is a compromise between time, space, operational complexity and recovery expectations.

That is why it is more useful to think not about which option sounds safer, but about which option fits the real restore scenario.

What should weigh in the decision

  • how quickly you need to be able to restore the data
  • how complex the restore path becomes
  • what load the backup window can take
  • what operational risk the chosen model adds
Sometimes the more economical backup model turns out to be more expensive on the day you have to restore. That is exactly why the topic cannot be settled with storage arithmetic alone.
