What makes a retention policy useful, not just long

A retention policy sounds good when it is "more". In practice useful retention logic is not measured only in days or number of copies, but in whether it makes sense for the way you actually recover.

A retention policy that is too short is a risk. One that is too long without a clear reason is often just noise and cost.

What makes retention meaningful

  • it matches real recovery scenarios
  • it has an understandable balance between short-term and longer-term keeping
  • it does not create a false sense of security
  • it can be explained operationally, not only with numbers
A good retention policy is one you can defend with a clear recovery conversation, not only with "it is safer this way".
