Monitoring and alerting for a small infrastructure: what is really worth watching

With a small infrastructure it is easy to fall into one of two extremes: either you watch almost nothing, or you collect too much noise and then do not know what matters. Both approaches are bad.

We see monitoring and alerting as a filter for attention. The idea is not to have as many graphs as possible, but to see in time when something leaves its normal behaviour.

What is usually worth watching

  • resource pressure that repeats, not single spikes
  • changes in latency and response time
  • signals that hint at degradation before a real incident
  • alerts that lead to action, not to fatigue
A good small monitoring system does not drown you in data. It helps you see patterns early enough to react calmly rather than in panic.
