Bad troubleshooting usually does not start with a lack of knowledge, but with a bad rhythm. Things are touched in many places, several hypotheses are changed at once, and in the end it is no longer clear what helped and what made things worse.
When that happens, the first task is not to "dig further", but to bring the process back into an orderly state.
What helps the most
- narrowing the problem down to fewer possible layers
- not touching several things at the same time
- keeping a short trail of what was changed and when
- stopping the chase after noise if there is no confirmed direction
