A VPS is ideal for hosting Minecraft! Here is how to get started:

Requirements

  • At least 2GB RAM (4GB recommended for more players)
  • Ubuntu 22.04 or 24.04
  • Java installed

Installation

1. Install Java:

apt update && apt install -y openjdk-21-jre-headless

2. Create a directory:

mkdir ~/minecraft && cd ~/minecraft

3. Download the Minecraft server:

wget https://piston-data.mojang.com/v1/objec ... server.jar -O server.jar

4. Start the server:

java -Xmx2G -Xms1G -jar server.jar nogui

5. Accept the EULA:

echo "eula=true" > eula.txt

6. Start it again and connect with your IP address from the Minecraft client.

Recommendations

  • Use screen or tmux so the server keeps running after you close SSH
  • Open port 25565 in the firewall
