When we talk about a small but serious self-hosted infrastructure, the firewall is not just "a box in front". It is a boundary, a control point and a place where some of the most important operational decisions become visible.
In our public architecture this layer is built around the Check Point Security Appliance 13500. More important than the model, though, is its role: traffic should not reach the internal systems chaotically, and changes to the edge layer should be deliberate, not improvised.
What we expect from this layer
- a clear dividing line between the internet and the internal roles
- predictable control over the published services
- easier analysis when there is unusual behaviour
- discipline when changing rules, NAT and exposed services
We will also publish more specific notes here when it makes sense to show real changes to the edge design.
