This is a compact comparison of four storage pools in Proxmox, measured with the same methodology. The tests were run with explicit absolute paths to each pool, so a wrongly targeted fio cannot mislead.
Methodology
- fio 3.39
- 4 parallel jobs
- 60 seconds
- profile: randrw with 70% read
- parameters: bs=4k, iodepth=32, direct=1
Comparison
Code: Select all
Pool Read IOPS Write IOPS Avg latency
-----------------------------------------------------
vps-start 3.8k 1.6k ~23.5 ms
vps-power 12.0k 5.1k ~7.45 ms
vps-plus 6.8k 2.9k ~13.1 ms
micron-mirror 4.6k 2.0k ~19.3 msShort conclusion
- vps-power is the strongest of the four pools in this particular test
- vps-plus sits in the middle and is noticeably above vps-start
- micron-mirror is not the fastest in this profile, but it has a separate role in the storage design
- the old, almost identical benchmark numbers were not a real comparison between the pools, but the result of a wrongly targeted test
For a more detailed explanation of how we arrived at these numbers and why the old benchmark was misleading, see also the topic Comparing the storage pools in Proxmox.
