What we check first when a VM has a latency problem and the disks are not the only cause

When someone says "the disk is slow", that is often just a symptom, not a diagnosis. In a virtual environment a latency problem can come from several layers at once: the VM, the hypervisor, the storage path, the internal network or the workload itself.

That is why the first goal is not to point at a culprit, but to narrow the problem down correctly.

The first checklist in such a case

  • is the problem in one VM only or is it wider
  • does it appear with a specific type of operation or all the time
  • are there network, compute and storage signals at the same time
  • was there a recent change that matches the timing
This kind of triage saves a lot of pointless tinkering. If you jump straight to "disk tuning", you can easily lose hours going in the wrong direction.
